Intel has officially released Penryn. Penryn itself is a name code for Intel’s latest processor generation, as the replacement of the previous generation which got name code ; Conroe.

Penryn vs Conroe
What actually distinguish Penryn from Conroe ? commonly, as something new, Penryn must have certain advantages that the other processor doesn’t. Penryn uses 45 nm (nano meter) production process different from the 65 nm production process adopted by the previous generation. Penryn also uses new materials called high-k and metal gate. Accoreding to Intel the obious advantages lie on the performance of 45 nm that they claimed better. The more efficient production process enables Intel to explore its capability to be more powerful.

Intel also claimed that there were several superiority of production process 45nm high-k metal gate compared to 65 nm.

* Lower about 30 percents power to switch [on/off] to transistors.
* Reduce current leak on gate oxide more than 10 times
* Enhance the speed of the transistor switching more than 20 percents

Penryn Features
1. SSE4 (Streaming SIMD Extentions 4)
2. Enhanced Intel Advanced Smart Cache
3. Better Divider
4. Super Shuffle engine
5. Improved Operating System Synchronization Primitive Performance
6. Deep Power Down Technology
7. Enhanced Intel Dynamic Acceleration Technology
8. Store Forwarding
