Anticipating Atom “Bomb” from Intel

Atom became a hot topic for quite a while, Intel officially released it at the IDF Shanghai 2008. Atom is the latest Intel processor, which aims for handhelds, especially MID (Mobile Internet Device) Atom also claimed as the smallest processor eve, the chip measures less than 25mm square and is packed with 47 million transistors. “This is our smallest processor built with the rest of the world’s smallest transistors,” said Intel.

Atom was made of micro-architecture, same as the processor widely used today, so that Atom will be compatible with most software.

The tiny processor also featuring 2 main issues; performance and power. It’s been tested to run Half-Life and several games that have relatively the same character.

As once used by Pentium 4, Atom also supports Hyper-Threading.
While the battery using sleep mode C6 that allows the hardware to consume 100mW in iddle mode. the 45nm process is what makes it so tiny, it means energy efficiency.
