MSI Wind: Another Eee PC ’s Rival

MSI Wind is now available in most countries in Europe. We have therefore put his hand over to deliver our impressions on this Eee PC contender..
A little hefty, but better equipped, the Wind is not short of arguments to prevail against his competitor from Asus. Its main asset is of course the Atom, the brand new and not all hot (rightly!) Intel processor, which equips the Wind (clocked at 1.6 GHz). Designed specifically for this kind of machine we’ll see if it is up to our expectations.
Another strong point of a true Wind 80GB hard disk, admittedly more gourmand, slower and far less “hype” that the DSS of Eee PC, but compared to bizarroïdes 4 + 8 GB of this last, it appears as if much more realistic we want to bring a minimum of files on your PC.

at last, the screen size (10”) is just the right for a machine this size. It is backlit by LED, and a color except a little too cold (image slightly bluish) on our test model, one is impressed by the quality… Let us not forget that the Wind was sold only 399 € version XP and Linux 349 €!
But what should also assure the Wind a good success is its look. Although very similar to that of the Eee PC,it is very elegant and should appeal to women. Well, black is cool, but white is still the most fun when it is pink girly enough.

We also appreciate the 3 USB ports, Ethernet port, the VGA output to connect an external display, integrated camera, the port for SD card, WiFi b / g and Bluetooth…! This means that it is complete. In fact, but it is on these structural “Netbook” as they are known, the only missing is a reader / DVD burner. You’ll use an external drive to USB it will buy more… Anyway, this is the price to pay for a PC also miniaturized and at this rate.
In short, being seduced by its design, attracted by its characteristics, remains to be seen what is the Atom in his heart… And it starts well, Windows XP will load quickly. An impression is confirmed when you start to use it. XP is at ease, surfing without problem on the Net and Office offers us his farandole Word, Excel, Powerpoint to speed V. Well, you say, the office is in charge light processor, then mattons a film in AVI stored on the hard drive … Hop, without hands, it passes without an eyelid. Come on, let’s be crazy, we launch a big download in WiFi, at the same time as Word open and inserting a USB key history to panic a little beast… Surprise, the Wind does not mix pedals, the Atom does not sourcille and 1 GB of RAM accumulate tasks open… Remarkable. Well, let’s be realistic, there is no question of installing or FarCry do 3DSMax, but in everyday use the classic Wind and Atom are largely the arrivals… Sub XP and Linux even better. Under Vista it is another matter! Okay, but how not to talk about autonomy? After referring to the 6-cell batteries, MSI has finally learned from 3 cells for Europe, therefore 2:30 max use…. It’s not huge but it is a classic on “Netbook”, however the Wind recharges quickly enough.
