Along with the release of 45-nanometer Opteron, AMD also confirmed that they also prepared for the AMD Phenom II X4, As indicated by the name, the Phenom II X4 is a quad-core processors that will be part of AMD Dragon, the next challenger of Intel’s Montevina platform.

AMD Dragon will carry many improvements that have been added to the latest Opteron, among which we can find some developments in processors: mainly, the greater frequency of the nuclei, the higher and lower power consumption. This means better performance per watt ratio for the new generation of Phenom II.

Still do not know too many details nor on the AMD Phenom II or AMD Dragon platform, even though the manufacturer might develop a system similar to that used Intel-based platform that implements both the processor itself as a graphics chip based on the ATi Radeon HD 4000 Series, and even wireless devices.

The AMD Phenom X4 II is scheduled to hit the market in the first quarter of 2009.

AMD opteron Shanggai 45 nm

AMD has presented today the new Opteron processors manufactured at 45 nanometers. Just to remember that the Opteron is the micro chip for workstations and servers.

The new manufacturing process at 45 nanometers means that, in addition to match the competition with Intel processors, it’ll also earn an extra performance from the previous generation of AMD processors itself. According to them, these new AMD Opteron Shanghai are up to 35% more effective than the previous generation of Opteron, called Barcelon..

The AMD Opteron ‘Shanghai’ is a four processor cores in a range between 2.3 and 2.7 GHz. According to the AMD, theyhave improved the performance of these processors work in virtualization, and have made a series of developments in the form of compatibility with next-generation components: older caches, increased frequencies of kernels and lower end, 75 watts.

Concerning the future, AMD intends to launch new models of these processors in the first quarter of 2009 and will be the Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE and SE, with a consumption of 55 watts and 105 respectively. It seems that the HE will be a good option to have a server with low / medium consumption and decent performance, while the SE could be just the opposite: the Opteron 45 nm, more powerful with a very high power consumption, suitable for companies of which workload on the servers is higher than the ordinary.

AMD Fusion gaming utility

AMD has rolled out the Fusion Gaming Utility, the fusion works by getting rid of all the unnecessary that actually doesn’t have to bother the gaming experience. AMD is trying to make an applications that simplify all the process.

“With AMD Game, we wanted to simplify the purchasing process,” said Davis. “A lot of who we’re talking about [with gamers] are enthusiasts who optimize their PCs, but what about folks want to get extra performance but don’t know how?” As Barry explained, the Fusion Utility works by “getting rid of all the unnecessary process that you don’t need to run” while gaming. AMD’s goal is to make the app as simple as possible — a single circular button on your desktop that, once clicked, turns off the various Windows processes and, should you have the proper AMD CPU, GPU and motherboard, boost the hardware output.”
